About the Artist

John David Baker has a lifetime art practice that includes work in drawing, painting, and sculptural mediums. He earned his BFA at Potter Fine Arts College, Western KY University, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1981. His work is in private collections and public. His recent painting involves bringing viewers into rich visual experiences of light on the high plains, deserts and mountains of the American West. He describes his paintings as “ attempts to convey to viewers a sense of visual urgency and of ephemeral transitions of light as it falls on the complex geometry of the land.” He draws great emotional sustenance from his experience of wide open places, in the distant gathering of weather, and the rise of the land against far horizons. He concentrates on the fundamentals of oil painting in his studio and plein air painting. His work expresses a keen eye for dynamic composition. His subjects often exhibit sweeping views in exceptionally dynamic light. He seeks to both present and preserve his own perceptions of light, color, shape and to draw out from those elements an emotional experience for the viewers of his work. His paintings are journeys that can be appreciated both in the narrative and the aesthetic experience in paint and canvas.
