About the Artist

Jeny Stoesz is a multi-media weaver, using her custom color hand-dyed yarns, wire, wood, film, -- anything that can be woven -- to create non-representational memories of the western landscape and history. Almost a Wyoming native, she weaves her experiences of rock hunting, picking chokecherries, chasing thunderstorms, and excaviting South Pass City (a ghost town), among others. She emphasizes the textural elements and weathered colors to evoke the sensations of living here so visitors can take reminders with them while leaving the actual beauty with western residents. One of the greatest compliments she received was when a tourist came to an art show, pointed to one of Jeny's weavings and exclaimed, "Oh, that's the rock pile we just passed on I-80!" It was a weaving with the shapes and colors reminiscent of midday at Vedauwoo, a favorite rock-climbing site outside of Laramie, Wyoming.

Her work began as a collaboration with her photographer-husband. Though he is now deceased she continues to be inspired by 40,000 images, taken day and night, which document the subtlty and ever-changing drama of the west. Over thirty years they developed 1,000 different colors to define the environment they loved. She currently is working from 2 tons of yarns and other materials. Her combinations of textures, colors and other objects cannot be duplicated and she often developes original weaving patterns to capture the variety and detail of the natural world. Her weavings invite you to look carefully to fully experience and participate in the wonders of the west.
